How to arrange dried flowers?

Would you like to surprise yourself or someone else with a personal dried flower bouquet you made yourself with our dried flowers? Read how to arrange your dried flowers in this blog.

Dried flowers were one of the biggest interior design trends of 2020, and their popularity is only increasing this year, according to several market surveys. Fortunately, they are also a very practical, accessible way to decorate your home. Unlike fresh flowers, dried bouquets do not wilt, require no water and can last for years if you take good care of them.

Dry flower suppliers

Florists across the country are starting to offer dried flowers alongside their traditional fresh arrangements. You can easily order a ready-made dried bouquet online or pick one up at your local florist, but if you are looking for something special for home, a friend or a loved one, putting together your own bouquet adds a personal touch and flower arranging is also a fun, creative skill to learn.

Briefly, how to dry flowers?

Buying individual dried flowers from florists/shops to make your own bouquet is the quickest and easiest option to make your own dried flower bouquet, but if you want to start from scratch with fresh flowers, you can dry your own flowers at home.

The best way to dry flowers is actually quite easy: you hang a bunch of flowers (not too big) upside down in on a line in a warmer/dry room. A laundry room, attic, for example, is perfect. It is also important not to hang the flowers in the sun, as the colour of the flowers may be extracted.

Now comes the fun part where you can bring your imagination to life! For the next steps, you can use flowers you have dried at home or picked from your local florist or online.

In fact, you can make various things with dried flowers, such as making an insane dried bouquet, filling a bell jar, making a wreath/ring and much more. If you are a bit creative, you will love working with dried flowers.

Central flowers, fillers and accent flowers

A dried flower bouquet consists of three elements: central flowers, filler flowers and accents.

Central flowers you can use are peonies, helichrysum, echinops, acroclinium, and achillea. Good filler flowers are limonium, gypsophila (gypsophila), thistles, carmathus, various wheat and corn amaranthus, and palm leaves. And you can add accents with flowers like lagurus (better known as rabbit's tail), phalaris, muni grass, eucalyptus and pampas grass. As with fresh flowers, colours are all about personal taste. You can opt for more muted tones or a brightly coloured bouquet, choosing a colour scheme that suits your interior taste.

Step by step

  1. Gather your flowers and place them in front of you, dividing them into central, filler and accents
  2. Remove most of the leaves from the flowers, so that the bouquet consists only of flowers. We personally do like it when there are leaves on the branches, as it often provides filling as well.
  3. Bring the central flowers together, followed by the filler flowers in your hand (make sure it is not too tight, as you will be able to apply a lesser number of flowers).
  4. Twist the bouquet as you add each flower a little to create spiral stems.
  5. Add accent flowers (e.g. Phalaris, Lagurus) to create height and movement in the bouquet.

One of the great things about dried flowers is that they are fairly low maintenance and can last a very long time, but there are some important care instructions to follow. Do not water your dried flowers and, preferably, do not place the bouquet in a damp room (such as a bathroom). This is because moisture can soak into the bouquet.

In doing so, it is important to make sure the dried flowers are not in direct sunlight. This is because direct sunlight draws out colour (just look at beach towels). But of course, it is also possible that you want to create the 'sun-bleached look'. This will give your dried flowers a golden sand colour over time.

If you take good care of them, your dried flowers will last more than 2 years, but we offer a 6-month guarantee in our webshop. Want to know how to store dried flowers?
