Dry flowers: what are they?

Dry flowers: what are they?

Find out exactly what dried flowers are and what varieties there are.

Lately, you will have heard and seen it more and more often: dried flowers. Dry flowers are all the rage and are the interior design trend of 2020. You can find them in almost every home decoration magazine, but why? In this blog, we tell you all about the fantastic product group: dried flowers, so that you know exactly what dried flowers are and why you should buy them.

Back in time

In the 80s and 90s, you might remember them: a dusty dried bouquet at your mother's or grandmother's house. Dry flowers were wildly popular at the time and this trend enjoyed several ages of popularity (or did the trend never stop?). Dry flowers were beautifully coloured, natural and had a minimalist feel. Even ancient Egyptians knew how to dry flowers under the sun, according to researchers.

Since the 80s and 90s, the drying process has been improved, allowing dried flowers to retain their colours/shapes even better. Blow the dust off dried flowers again, because they are totally hip & trendy again!

Dry flowers in the now

Have you heard a lot about dried flowers lately? There's no way around it: home and flower bloggers and trendy influencers (social media) have partly ensured that this trend is all over again. In almost every magazine on trends, home styles and interiors, dried flowers enjoy the stage they deserve. Even at home fairs in Cologne, Paris and Stockholm, you could find dried flowers at many stands. The type of dried flowers we encounter the most are dried grasses & grains (but we'll tell more about them here).

So... what exactly are dried flowers?

Dry flowers, contrary to what the name suggests, is a collective name of natural, organic decorations from all over the world. Under the collective name dry flowers, it ranges from ornamental flowers to grasses and grains. We also designate accompaniments such as branches, feathers and other organic material as 'dry flowers'. Dry flowers are perfect for creating the most beautiful compositions/compositions, with the most beautiful colours & styles. This is mainly because dried flowers are easy to cut and colour. Using a special drying technique, dried flowers are dried in such a way that the (ornamental) flowers and grasses retain their beautiful, natural colours as well as possible.

Dried flowers

In our opinion, within the term 'dried flowers', the most beautiful group is of course: the (ornamental) flowers/herbs. Not all flowers are suitable for drying, but about 50 varieties are perfect for it. You can find dried flowers in almost all colours, from beautiful blues to rustic pinks. The best-known varieties (which you probably know yourself) are

  • The thistle (Cardoon or Eryngium);
  • Limonium;
  • Lavender (Lavendin);
  • Hydrangea;
  • Roses;
  • Helichrysum;
  • Statice (Sinuata);
  • Gypsifer;
  • Craspedia.

Natural dried flowers

Within the 'flowers' group, you will find two categories in our webshop, namely 'Natural' and 'Dyed'. Natural are natural dried decorations, including flowers, which have been dried naturally, without any additives or treatments. Despite the fact that nothing has been added to these flowers, they have the most beautiful colours and shapes.

Dyed dried flowers

When dried decorations, especially flower, grass and wheat varieties, are given a colour and therefore dyed, we call them dyed dried flowers. The flower, grass and wheat varieties that are dyed have the most beautiful colours and retain their colour better thanks to the special dyeing technique. Practically all flowers, grains and grasses can be dyed.

Dry flowers preserved

Preserved dried flowers include flower varieties or branches that are treated with glycerine at their finest. This method allows the flower varieties to retain their natural colour and shape. This technique is most commonly used for roses (see the webshop with preserved roses).

Dried grasses & grains

One dried flower variety you will come across a lot are dried grasses and grains. The most commonly used grass is Pampas grass (see webshop). Dried pampas grass in a vase or pot is a wonderful decoration material. You can buy the grasses and grains both natural and dyed.
